More Than a Brand: The History, Purpose, and Community Behind Herd Heritage’s Spring Branding
Every spring on ranches across the country, families, friends, and neighbors gather for a tradition that has existed for generations, branding day.
At Herd Heritage, our spring branding event is one of those days that reflects what ranching has always been about: caring for animals, preserving tradition, and bringing community together through hard work.
For many people outside of agriculture, branding can sound unfamiliar, or even harsh, without understanding the purpose behind it. We wanted to share more about why branding exists, where the tradition comes from, and why we are choosing to take part in it.
The History of Branding
Livestock branding dates back thousands of years. Historians trace the practice all the way back to ancient Egyptians, who used marks to identify ownership of cattle.
In the American West, branding became especially important as cattle ranching expanded in the 1800s. Ranchers often grazed cattle on open ranges where herds from multiple farms could intermingle. A registered brand allowed ranchers to identify which animals belonged to them and helped prevent theft or ownership disputes.
Over time, branding became deeply rooted in ranching culture, not just as a practical tool, but as an event that brought communities together. Entire families, neighboring ranches, and friends would gather to help one another during branding season because many hands made the work safer, faster, and more efficient.
That spirit still exists today.
It Takes a Community
This may be our farm, but branding day is never accomplished alone.
Friends bring horses. Family members help sort cattle. Neighbors lend an extra hand wherever needed. Kids run around. Someone is usually manning the grill. Stories get shared, people catch up, and hard work turns into a meaningful day spent together.
It reminds us of how agriculture has historically functioned - communities helping communities.
Long before modern convenience, farmers relied on each other during harvests, planting seasons, barn raisings, and livestock work. Branding day carries that same spirit.
It’s one of the few times each year where work and tradition collide in a way that feels deeply connected to the generations before us.
Why We Brand Our Cattle
At Herd Heritage, branding serves an important purpose.
Our cattle spend much of their lives grazing on pasture, rotating through fields where they have plenty of space to roam and graze as nature intended. Because they live in larger pasture settings, permanent identification is an important added layer of protection for our farm and our animals.
Ear tags can occasionally be lost or removed over time, but a registered brand provides a lasting form of identification that helps clearly establish ownership if questions ever arise.
Unfortunately, cattle theft has been a reality in agriculture for generations, and permanent identification helps protect both farmers and livestock.
Beyond identification, branding day also gives us an opportunity to bring cattle in for an overall wellness check before they head out for the grazing season. We evaluate body condition, check for any health concerns, and make sure each animal is in good shape before returning them to pasture.
Everything we do within our regenerative focused farming practices is built around raising healthy animals that will heal the land and the community it serves.
Branding is one small part of responsible herd management, and when done properly, it helps us care for our animals well for the long term.
Why We Open It Up to Others
This year, On May 30th at 9AM, we’re inviting our community to our cattle property at 6290 S. West Lebanon Rd. Navarre, Ohio 44662, to experience spring branding with us.
Not because it’s a performance but because we believe people should have opportunities to see and understand agriculture firsthand.
You’ll get to witness real farm life, ask questions, share a meal, and better understand what goes into raising livestock responsibly.
Food doesn’t begin at the grocery store and we think reconnecting people to where their food comes from matters now more than ever.
Spring branding is hard work.
It’s dusty. It’s imperfect. It’s deeply rooted in history.
And it’s also one of our favorite days of the year because it reminds us that farming has never been done alone.
From our family to yours, we’d love to have you join us.
